Last month, South Africa-based Zimbabwean visual artist Augustine Makombe had the priviledge of participating in the iconic Nelson Mandela Day celebrations in South Africa, an experience he cherished deeply.
Makombe, known for his active involvement in civic programmes in South Africa, was invited by Innocentia Mpeli, the Atteridgeville Stadium centre manager, to contribute to the celebrations in an artistic capacity.
The late Nelson Mandela, a revered figure and freedom champion, had strong ties with Zimbabwe, adding significance to Makombe’s involvement.”I was invited by Mpeli after she saw my work and was inspired. Having done artwork for various malls around South Africa, I was able to secure recommendations more easily,” Makombe shared.
“I was thrilled and emotional to be selected for such a significant project at a major police station in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. I was part of the team painting a container for victims of abuse.”
Known for his passion for teaching art to young minds, Makombe also recently visited Harare to conduct a skills development programme for children, furthering his commitment to nurturing artistic talent. – @MbuleloMpofu
