Volleyball coach fired over Facebook comments

Gororo was initially suspended but the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) has since resolved to dismiss the Harare-based coach. ZVA vice president Erasmu Mupukuta yesterday said Railstars coach Itsanang Abu-Basutu had been appointed the acting national team coach. Abu-Basutu was assistant to Gororo.

“The coach was asked to submit his written defence within seven days and he has not done so. “So we have since replaced him with Abu-Basutu in the interim,” said Mupukuta.

Gororo had in November written under his profile on Facebook that Zimbabwe volleyball was in a mess.

“I love my volleyball so much but hey…..

“The sport has no leadership. The sport has lost direction.

“People just sit in a meeting and decide what they want.

“It’s not power, it’s just a responsibility.

“I wish I could speed up a complete overhaul,” Gororo wrote.

But ZVA executive led by president Fred Ndlovu, secretary Ringi Mapondera, Enzanai Madzivire and Mupukuta were not pleased.

The ZVA chiefs said the statement by Gororo put volleyball into disrepute and was highly defamatory of the ZVA board and such statements were not expected from the person of a national team coach.
