“Last year we had very few teams but this year we witnessed more teams coming to register in our league and three teams came from as far as Gweru,” Mundiya said.
MSU for both men and women, Cats and Diamonds were the teams that came from Gweru to register in the Bulawayo Volleyball League.
Mundiya also expressed satisfaction over the Bulawayo teams who finished at the top position in the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association.
“Two local teams were able to withstand pressure from the national league and managed to get a top finish. ZRP Raiders were crowned champions while Highlanders came second. Three of our teams were selected to represent the country in the Southern Zone Championships,” she said.
ZRP Raiders, Railstars and Highlanders were the trio who were selected to represent the nation in Zambia in November this year though Raiders failed to travel due to logistical issues.
For the first time in the history of Zimbabwean volleyball all the teams were able to reach the quarter-final stage and Railstars Volleyball Club even managed to reach the semi-finals level.
Mundiya said they were grateful to the support they were granted by Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube when they travelled Zambia and were appealing to other members of the corporate sector to emulate him.
“Dube helped us out a lot when we travelled to the Southern Zone Championships in Zambia and we are grateful for his support. We are however appealing to the corporate world to come forth and provide financial assistance and we will raise the flag of the nation high as we are capable of doing that,” she said.
She said they were planning to resume the league as early as possible next year.
