THE Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) has postponed the Zim Open Tournament that had been scheduled for Gweru this weekend to allow the volleyball fraternity to join the nation in Cyclone Idai rescue and relief efforts.
The three-day tournament had been set to start on Friday.
Teams from around the country had been expected to converge on the Midlands Province capital for the Zim Open Tournament that held on a rotational basis each year.
No teams had been reported to have already arrived in Gweru when the announcement was made by the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association.
“We wish to advise all clubs, stakeholders and supporters of the postponement of the Zim Open Tournament which had been scheduled from 29 to 31 March 2019, in Gweru to a later date to be advised.
“The postponement paves way for our clubs, stakeholders and supporters to join the nation in mourning our friends and relatives whom we have lost due to Cyclone Idai. We further urge all our clubs, supporters and friends to support relief efforts towards victims of the cyclone,” said ZVA in a statement.
The country is mourning the death of more than a hundred people that died as a result of the natural catastrophe.
Hundreds more are missing as the death toll continues to rise with each passing day.
