Volleyball tourney mired in controversy

It was alleged that some administrators appointed themselves to positions of umpires so that they could receive double payments as administrators and umpires.
Officials and umpires were paid a minimum of $20 per  day depending on where one came from with teams  paying a total of $250 to participate yet there was no prize money save for a token of appreciation of two balls.

“My brother, ask the officials why some of them who have administrative roles in the Bulawayo  Volleyball Association (BVA) are doubling up as referees.
“These people want to earn double and it is not right, let administrators be administrators and referees be the referees,” fumed one club official.
Mxolisi Ndlovu, the BVA treasurer, however played down the accusations as baseless saying there was nothing new as the same arrangement was used in the           past.

He said his association used qualified umpires who happened to be administrators.
“Concerns raised by these people are baseless because all what we did was above board. We ensured that the tournament was run professionally by                 engaging only those individuals qualified to officiate,” Ndlovu said.
He also said only two of the referees had administrative roles and those were BVA secretary general Brian Manuel who was one of the country’s top referees and

Sibangani Mashasha who is a BVA administrator and one of the only two Zimbabwean coaches who could officiate internationally.
Meanwhile, ZRP Raiders women won the tournament  after they won all of their matches played in a round robin format.
They beat MSU 3-0, Diamonds 3-0, Highlanders 3-1 and Izihlobo 3-0.

The men’s final could not be played due to time factor with Bulawayo’s Railstars already through to the final following a 2-0 win over Itsanang Abu-Basuthu’s Harare outfit Support Unit.

MSU versus Hawks semi-final game could not be played since it was too late.
The other finalists will come from the MSU and Hawks match, set to be played in two weeks time at a venue yet to be announced.
