VICE-PRESIDENT Dr Constantino Chiwenga has called for integrated solutions to problems that affect young people to create solid and robust developmental opportunities for them.
Officiating at an event to celebrate World Children’s Day, which coincided with Unicef’s 75th anniversary here last night, Dr Chiwenga said Zimbabwe had domesticated the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children through Article 81 of the Constitution which includes Children’s Rights.
He said young people face a myriad of challenges which negatively impact on their development.
The challenges include teenage pregnancy, disruptions to school and learning and other related challenges to emergencies such as Covid-19 and impacts of climate change.
“It is my great pleasure to be here today in this resort city of Victoria Falls to join the rest of the world in commemorating World Children’s Day. It is an important day of action for children that takes place every year on November 20, the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child,” Dr Chiwenga said.
“The day aims to highlight critical issues affecting children’s lives and support the engagement of children and young people as advocates for their own rights. This year is an important year as Unicef celebrates 75 years since it began its mandate to support states to protect children’s rights to survive, thrive and reach their full potential.”
Dr Chiwenga said Government congratulates Unicef for the United Agency’s milestones.
“It is very exciting to come together here in this beautiful place to celebrate and highlight these moments punctuated by the lighting of the bridge with blue colour of the World Children’s Day. The Government of Zimbabwe has always placed great importance in upholding and protecting the rights of all children,” he said.
“We need to put in place solid and robust developmental opportunities for this generation of children and young people who will be leaders of tomorrow. There is an urgent need to address these vulnerable and to come up with integrated solutions to these complex challenges.” -@ncubeleon
