Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga on Saturday joined the Musavaya family in celebrating the birthday of his former teacher, Sekuru Maxmillan Muvirimi Musavaya.

Sekuru Musavaya was Vice President Chiwenga’s teacher before the VP joined the war of liberation where he played an important part in the struggle for independence.

Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga on Saturday joined the Musavaya family in celebrating the birthday of his former teacher, Sekuru Maxmillan Muvirimi Musavaya.

Vice President Chiwenga was at Mt St Mary’s Mission Rusunzwe in Hwedza in the early 1970s together with the late national hero Air Chief Marshall Perrance Shiri, Brigadier- General (retired) Richard Huchu, among others, who were taught by Sekuru Musavaya.

The Musavaya family organised a party for Sekuru Musavaya and invited VP Chiwenga, who responded to their invitation and came to celebrate his teacher.

Speaking at the celebrations, Vice President Chiwenga reminisced on his time at school.

“I am pleased to be part of this important day as we join the Musavaya family in celebrating Sekuru Maxmillan Muvirimi Musavaya’s birthday,” he said.

“It is glorifying that God has richly blessed Sekuru Musavaya with a long and fulfilling life so that he continues to serve the Lord.

“I am glad to inform you that I met Sekuru Musavaya at Mt St Mary’s Mission Rusunzwe in Hwedza in the early 1970s. He was my school teacher along with other teachers such as Mr Tome, Mr Tazvishaya, Brother Jumipa, Sister Redempta and Father Pascal, among others.

“The teachers were God-fearing and that helped instil enduring Christian values in us at a very tender age. You may wish to know that some of the students who were my colleagues under Mr Musavaya at the time included the late Air Chief Marshall Perrance Shiri, Brig-Gen Richard Huchu, Patricia and Austin Kasiyamhuru and Mable Benadett Mukarakate.”

Vice President Chiwenga borrowed words of fulfilment from the Bible in Proverbs 16 verse 31: “Long Life is the reward of the righteous; grey hair is a glorious crown”.

“Indeed, Sekuru Musavaya has consistently assisted the community in various ways since I first met him more than five decades ago,” he said.

Vice President Chiwenga said the student-teacher relationship grew over the years as the two continued to meet every Sunday for mass at St Gerard’s Catholic Church.

He told people of his appreciation for the assistance Sekuru Musavaya gave him as he was writing his autobiography.

Vice President Chiwenga said Sekuru Musavaya generously answered his research questions.

“Sekuru Musavaya is now my Mukwasha,” he said.

“My young sister, Mrs Marufu nee Auxilia Chiwenga, is married to Sekuru Musavaya’s cousin.”
