Africa Moyo in MAPUTO, Mozambique
VICE President Kembo Mohadi arrived in Maputo, Mozambique, last night to continue the programme of assessing liberation war shrines in neighbouring countries and take corrective action where necessary, for the departed freedom fighters to rest in peace.
The Rhodesian regime launched air and ground strikes against liberation forces and their camps and against refugee camps in neighbouring countries and many of those killed in these attacks were buried in those countries.
The Vice President arrived at Maputo International Airport shortly after 6pm and was received by Mozambique’s Minister of Combatants Nyeleti Mondlane, Mozambique’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe Carvalho Muária, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique Dr Victor Matemadanda and other senior Government officials.
VP Mohadi was coming from a similar visit to Tanzania, which was preceded by visits to Zambia and Angola.
The visit is part of Government’s efforts to document and preserve the legacy of the liberation struggle fighters and honour fallen heroes and heroines buried in foreign lands.
In an interview, Dr Matemadanda said when he was appointed Ambassador, one of the assignments he was given by President Mnangagwa pertained to looking for graves, identified and unidentified, of Zimbabwean freedom fighters who died during the liberation war struggle.
“We have done this in almost all the provinces, save for one, Nampula province, where we have not gone because there is continuous war,” he said.
“But in the other provinces we have covered, we have identified graves and have also taken coordinates of where the graves are.
“We then sent reports to the President on what we have discovered and recommending what we thought should be done.
“And it is from these reports that the Vice President has been assigned to visit and see for himself these sites.”
Today, VP Mohadi starts his visit with a courtesy call on Mozambican Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levy.
They are set to discuss a range of issues including a strengthening of relations between the neighbouring countries that share a rich common history.
Afterwards, VP Mohadi will leave for Chimoio, where he will visit shrines put up there. Chimoio is located in Manica province and was the headquarters or training camp for Zanu during the liberation struggle.
