VICE-PRESIDENT Kembo Mohadi is set to commission 37 newly built houses on Thursday in Nsungwale Village, Binga District, Matabeleland North Province.

The houses were constructed by the Government to resettle families who lost their homes during the devastating floods in February 2020.

The floods, triggered by the confluence of Sibwambwa, Sikanda, Namapande, and Manyenyengwa rivers, displaced 181 families, prompting a Government-led initiative dubbed “Binga Housing Recovery Project” to relocate and permanently resettle 81 of the most affected households to safer ground.

The newly constructed houses are in line with Government’s disaster response and rural development efforts under the Second Republic and a commitment to ensuring no community is left behind.

In an interview, Binga District Development Coordinator Mr Lands Kabome confirmed the imminent commissioning of the housing units.
“A total of 37 houses were constructed and Vice-President Mohadi will officially commission them on Thursday, 31 July 2025. In addition, a 10,5-kilometre access road leading to the settlement was rehabilitated and is currently being gravelled. Water reticulation infrastructure servicing the houses has also been completed,” said Mr Kabome.

The new homes, equipped with modern amenities, stand out in a district where many rural families still live in traditional pole and dagga structures.

The Nsungwale relocation project is part of the Government disaster mitigation and rural development strategy, which includes infrastructure development, improved service delivery, and climate adaptation planning, aligned with National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and Vision 2030 goal.
