VICE-PRESIDENT Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday encouraged Bulawayo residents to take sport seriously, saying it can improve their livelihoods. Speaking at the launch of the Bulawayo Western Social Soccer League (BWSSL) at Iminyela’s Ndola Grounds, VP Mpoko said: “Nothing beats what you’ve done. Keep up with your healthy living and thank you for inviting me. It will be good to have some of the boys who’re here today playing for the national team in future.”

The BWSSL broke away from the Bulawayo Social Soccer League following clashes between the clubs and the executives. The league kicked off in February, but secretary Daniel Mlotshwa said they felt it was necessary to announce their arrival by launching it yesterday.

“We’ve been courting various commercial partners and I’m glad that we managed to get the backing of Kingdom Blue, who’re financing the launch and the four-team tournament. We intend to be one of the top social leagues in the western areas, hence we’re serious about courting funders. We’re grateful to VP Mphoko and Mpopoma legislator Joe Tshuma, who graced our launch and we pledge to be one of the best run leagues,” said Mlotshwa.

Kingdom Blue, a South African-based funeral parlour that is venturing into Zimbabwe, sponsored a four-team tournament, which was won by Nketa’s Sakhelene, who beat Magwegwe United 4-2 in the final. Other teams that participated in the BWSSL launch tournament are Ndola Stars of Iminyela and Cowdray Park’s Fireworks.

Other clubs affiliated to the BWSSL are Zulu Chiefs, Mabutweni Allstars, Drugs Section, Mayellow FC, Finance, Nketa 8 Oldtimers and Real Magwegwe.
