VICE President Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday visited the late Tafi Moyo’s family on behalf of President Mugabe following the unveiling of a tombstone for the businessman and long serving Highlanders patron. Moyo died in 2014 at the age of 108. VP Mphoko said he was sent by the President to attend the memorial service on Saturday but he could not do so as he was not feeling well.
The VP described the late businessman as a revolutionary patriot and a man of courage who worked tirelessly for the people. “President Mugabe sent me to attend Moyo’s tombstone unveiling but I didn’t manage because I fell ill. I then visited them this morning and passed President Mugabe’s message to the family.
“The message is that Moyo will always be remembered for the work that he did for the people and the nation,” said VP Mphoko. He said President Mugabe’s message shows that he cares about his people and respects those who work tirelessly to bring development to the nation.
“Moyo played a significant role in the liberation struggle and was a well-known person for his good works. The liberation history of Zimbabwe cannot be narrated without the mention of Moyo as he was one of the founders of the nation’s liberation platform. He worked closely with the late Dr Joshua Nkomo and President Mugabe and other nationalists and left a legacy that has to be emulated by generations to come,” said VP Mphoko.
The late Moyo was one of the first black business people in the country.
He was among daring Zimbabweans who transported groups of guerrillas with their arms to various parts of the Matabeleland region and provided them with clothing and other necessary items.
Moyo was also well-known for his passion for sports and education, a philanthropist who provided funds for a number of students and donated furniture to a number of schools. — @pamelashumba1
