THE patron of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation General Assembly, Vice President Joice Mujuru, has said sport will go a long way in promoting the resort town of Victoria Falls as a destination of choice.She was speaking soon after teeing off at 10.34am at the UNWTO invitational golf tournament held at the 18-hole Elephant Hills Golf Course on Friday.

The invitational tournament was held to promote the country and Victoria Falls ahead of the forthcoming UNWTO General Assembly that will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Zambia from 24-29  August.

“I am very excited because this is also the only second time that I get to play golf. I have never been a sportsperson myself but I believe after today I will become a keen golfer,” said Vice President Mujuru.

She said the event would entice people within and outside Zimbabwe to cherish the country and this would help to bring in more visitors to the country.
Vice President Mujuru led a field of 100 players, made up of 25 four-team players in a tournament that used a four-ball-better-ball format.

After taking to the tee-box, sponsored by NetOne, Vice President Mujuru was followed by the deputy Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Douglas Mombeshora and motor racing driver Axcil Jeffries.

The Vice President later toured Chinotimba Hospital and the Victoria Falls Marquee Convention Centre where she expressed satisfaction with work that has been done to date.

Other sports personalities that graced the event were renowned cricketer Hamilton Masakadza while legendary footballer George Shaya who won a record five Soccer Star of the Year awards joined the cast later in the day.

Witnessing the Vice President teeing off was the Minister of Transport, Communication and Infrastructure Development Nicholas Goche, and Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office Sylvester Nguni.
