ZANU-PF on Thursday set up an ad hoc committee led by Vice President Joice Mujuru to oversee party provincial elections in the seven provinces where these are due to ensure fairness. This follows allegations of vote rigging in the first three provinces where the polls were held recently.

The team also includes national chairman Simon Khaya Moyo, secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa and the secretary for Commissariat Webster Shamu.

Elections in the three provinces were beset by unavailability of party registers, failure to deploy voting material and poor communication of results among other challenges.

In Mashonaland Central province, voting which was supposed to be conducted in one day was extended to two days, but still party members in six districts failed to vote.

Among the irregularities cited were incomplete and fake registers that prompted accusations of rigging.
In Manicaland and Midlands provinces, aggrieved candidates cited several irregularities, chief among them vote rigging.

Elections for Mashonaland West province that were supposed to be held at the same time with those in Manicaland and the Midlands were postponed after irregularities were also noted.

The remaining provinces are Bulawayo, Harare, Mashonaland East and West, Masvingo, and Matabeleland North and South.
Addressing journalists, Zanu-PF national chairman Simon Khaya Moyo said the ad hoc committee met and resolved that provincial elections for the remaining provinces will be held concurrently on 23 November.

He said Politburo and Central Committee members will be deployed from the Zanu-PF headquarters to supervise the elections.
“Team members and candidates will be announced in due course,” said Khaya-Moyo.

The provincial elections were being held in preparation for the party’s Annual National People’s Conference to be held in Chinhoyi from December 10 to 15. — New Ziana.
