Vusa Nyoni finds new home

He left struggling Germinal Beerschot who are staring relegation if they don’t improve on their performance.

Nyoni became a Mons player on 4 January and made his debut on Saturday in a 3-2 home loss to Mechelen where he played 62 minutes before being taken out for Thomas Chatelle.

Although a regular at Beerschot, Nyoni could do little to help his side move out of the dreaded drop zone.

He faces his former paymasters on Saturday in a league match.

Financial details involved in the transfer could not be immediately ascertained but reports from Belgium indicate that he penned a three-and-a-half-year deal that would keep him at his new base until 2016.

Nyoni played 79 matches for his former club, 30 of those matches as a first team player, further underlining his importance to the Belgian side.

The former Bosso player, who also had stints with the now defunct AmaZulu arrived in Belgium in 2006 with another star midfielder and national teammate, Honour Gombani where they joined Cercle Brugge, making 100 appearances in the process.

The left-footed player is known for his versatility, which allows him to be able to take different midfield or defence roles. Nyoni is enthusiastic about his new challenge but says he will never forget his time in Antwerp.

“I’ve had a really great time with Beerschot. I’m really grateful to all the people who have supported me. I’m leaving the club while it’s going through a bit of a difficult period, but that’s football. Mons is full of ambition, and the working conditions there are good. Everything seems really professional here, and that’s a big motivating factor for me,” Nyoni told his new club’s official website.

He will wear Number 21 shirt (in reference to his date of birth) for his new adventure as part of Enzo Scifo’s side. Founded in 1910 with the help of King Albert One, the club has had an on and off relationship with the top-flight league but has been playing in the Jupiler league since their promotion in 2002.

Meanwhile, another former Highlanders player and Warriors defender Noel Kaseke has joined Al Shaab in the United Arab Emirates, becoming the second Zimbabwean after Edward Sadomba to move to that league in the last two weeks.

Kaseke, 32, spent five seasons at Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia, where he won five titles and played in the Uefa Europa League and the Champions League.

Last summer, he moved to another Cypriot club, Alki Larnaca, after the end of his contract with Omonia.

“I’m really happy with my move to the UAE,” the former Highlanders player said. “The club president and the fans have given me a great welcome and the tough work begins now to keep them in this league,” Kaseke said.
