Walking in Spirit: Judging

Matthew 7:1-2 NIV; “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

It’s so easy to see the perceived faults of the people around us. We are often involved in endless conversations that are based on us sharing the conclusions we have formed about other people’s personalities. It’s very easy to draw conclusions.

How many times have we actually sought to understand the person we are gossiping about? Quiet people are often branded as arrogant or stuck up. Have we ever taken the time to engage with the individual concerned to understand them? Sometimes people choose not to speak for a myriad of reasons. It could be a speaking disability, confidence issues based on their background or they are simply reserved in nature.

The easiest thing to do is to conclude — this is what I think this person is about and this is what they are. During our interactions with others we tend to share our opinions of the people around us. Before we know it, our caricature of the individual concerned has developed a life of its own, that we can no longer control or stop.

Your opinion now becomes the widely accepted view of the person or persons concerned. Through our actions we cause pain to the individual, their friends and family. Are you that person? Ask yourself, now that I have concluded about the nature and character of others and in the process caused irreparable damage, what did I benefit from this action?

Do your opinions of the next person really matter? Sometimes we think they do, but in reality they don’t. Yet we use them as a weapon all the time. Take time to hear what people say about you in private. You will be shocked.

The impression you create is not necessarily the opinion concluded.

Have you ever asked yourself whether the people around you really know your character and the person you are? It’s easy to conclude and judge, but unless you take time to interact with and understand a person we should not form conclusive opinions that we ultimately share with others.

Try not to spread opinions which may result in causing pain to others.

Be blessed.
