Wangu Mazodze face allegations of match fixing

EASTERN Region Division One Soccer League log leaders, Wangu Mazodze are allegedly embroiled in a match fixing scandal, something that may derail their campaign for the Premier Soccer League ticket.

Allegations are that through Whatsapp and some named runners, Wangu Mazodze FC approached Triangle players seeking their part in fixing the result. The players were to perform below par and ensure Mazodze won the match.

The same modus operandi were used on Chiredzi Stars FC using the same numbers and persons including a United States of America.

In the Chiredzi match, the referee of the day was allegedly assaulted by Chiredzi Stars officials and supporters who accused him of outright bias towards the visitors.

Wangu Mazodze are owned by US based Richard Mazodze whose other Division One project in the Central Region has been booted out of the league. Both Chiredzi and Triangle wrote to Zifa Eastern Region about the issue and Chiredzi Stars are expected to appear before a Zifa Disciplinary Committee.

Luke Masomere who is the Triangle coach confirmed yesterday that club seniors were seized with the matter.

“Yes, I also came across some funny WhatsApp messages directed to our players. They were from a certain club, they wanted results manipulated and that is why we are all fighting corruption. We want Fair Play in the game,” said Masomere whose Triangle is lying third.

He said he would love to hear how the case ends. The Eastern and Northern Regions have in the past been hit by alleged corrupt refereeing syndicates and several referees have even been assaulted.

Zimbabwe Football Association headquarters in Harare when asked about the incidents that happened on the weekends of September 13-15 and 20-22, said they were yet to receive reports from Eastern Region.

“It hasn’t arrived at the Association officially and the CEO will only be able to comment after it does,” Zifa said in a statement.
