PIONEERS of the liberation struggle must not be forgotten as some of them are struggling for survival. Addressing mourners at the burial of the late Cde Theresa Moyo, who was Zanu-PF’s Bulawayo provincial Deputy Secretary for Economic Affairs at Nkulumane Provincial Heroes last Friday, the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs in Bulawayo, Cde Nomthandazo Eunice Moyo, said the party and government seem to have forgotten some liberation war pioneers who are struggling on their own.
She said liberation war stalwarts deserved respect for their efforts in liberating the country.
“It’s our duty to accord them the respect they deserve. We’ve forgotten the pioneers of the struggle and that’s what’s destroying the party.
“We don’t lose anything by respecting our elderly (people),” Cde Moyo said.
“We need to record the names of some of our aged leaders who nurtured us in politics. We’ve to visit them and see how they’re doing.
“They’re struggling but we’re doing nothing about it. The provincial chair, we need to prioritise on the welfare of our elderly.”
In February, former Zapu National Executive Council member and veteran freedom fighter, Cde Jane Ngwenya, told The Chronicle that she felt neglected.
She said she was still politically active in heart and mind, but felt excluded.
“I’m worried because those I worked with in war seem to be too busy. Some come to visit me and some don’t. I’m still politically active in heart and in mind and I wish one day they could come and pick me up so I can attend the party’s conferences.
“I’m willing to be there when the party and the nation celebrate and commemorate days like Independence and Heroes but I’m old now. I really miss it,” Cde Ngwenya said.
