Midlands Bureau

Former Midlands Provincial War Veterans Chair Cde Tozivashe a.k.a Terry Shumba has died.

He was 62.

Cde Shumba who had been in and out of hospital of late, succumbed to heart failure on admission to Gweru Provincial Hospital on the eve of the Heroes Day Celebrations. Midlands Provincial War Veterans chairperson Cde Virginia Mpasu confirmed the death of Cde Shumba whose Chimurenga name was Makhataza.

Cde Mpasu described the passing on of Cde Shumba as a great loss to the province and the nation at large.

“He has been very instrumental in the province, when we formed the association we were together and he served the War veterans as the provincial chair for a long time before I took over from him, I learnt a lot from him and we have been working very well together in his new assignment as the War Veterans’ Provincial Field Officer,” said Cde Mpasu. She said Cde Shumba would be buried at his rural home in Mberengwa’s Gwehanga village under Chief Chingoma as per his wish. Cde Mpasu said the fact that Cde Shumba died a time the nation was celebrating the lives of the heroes and heroines who brought about independence was ironic.

“During Heroes celebrations, and other liberation and provincial hero’s funeral, he used to be a Master of Ceremonies but this year, it’s ironic that he died on the eve of the heroes’ day celebrations. We are celebrating his life,” she said.
