Scores of war veterans from across the country have had boreholes drilled at their homes in the ongoing Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme.
Under the programme, thousands of veterans of the liberation struggle will benefit from the newly launched scheme which also includes housing and solar power.
The programme is aimed at providing decent housing for war veterans while ensuring they benefit from solar energy schemes.
Each war veteran will also have access to a solar-powered borehole at their home, and already war veterans from Mashonaland East, Manicaland, Mashonaland West, Harare and Matabeleland South have had boreholes drilled at their homes.
The programme, which is being spearheaded by Special Presidential Adviser Dr Paul Tungwarara, will cascade to every province in sync with President Mnangagwa’s dictum of leaving no one and no place behind.
“We are not stopping, we are going to reach out to every war veteran so that they benefit from the scheme, we are certainly leaving no one and no place behind. This scheme is here to stay and we are carrying out the President’s programmes which are key to modernising and industrialising our country,” said Dr Tungwarara.
In another related scheme, war veterans have started applying for their US $1,5 million revolving fund under the Presidential War Veterans Fund which is currently being distributed across the provinces.
Each province is getting at least US$150 000 to ensure all members access the funds from the district level.
The intended beneficiaries are expected to apply for the revolving funds through their district structures. These will then be processed from the district to the national office.
The fund is spearheaded by President Mnangagwa as part of his commitment to improve the welfare of war veterans and their widows across the country.
After establishing their businesses, the beneficiaries are required to repay the loans to ensure the fund’s sustainability through the provincial bank.
The fund will be continuously reviewed and increased based on the honesty and diligence of beneficiaries in repaying the loans so that others can also benefit.
