WAR veterans are ready to work towards the transformation of the country’s economy in line with Vision 2030, Zanu PF secretary for War Veterans Affairs Cde Douglas Mahiya has said.

Addressing war veterans, Cde Mahiya urged them to remain united, honour sacrifices of the liberation struggle and rally behind President Mnangagwa as the country advances its national development agenda.

“We want to be transformed from being political soldiers as we did to becoming economic soldiers so that we can document and support the economic trajectory of Zimbabwe,” said Cde Mahiya.

He appealed to the Government to speed up the identification and repatriation of the remains of liberation war fighters buried in neighbouring countries so that they can be accorded decent burials back home.

He said the courage demonstrated by the sacrifices made by war veterans ensures that the nation will always remain independent.

“It is a great milestone for Zimbabwe, even in the midst of neo-colonial machinations and illegal sanctions imposed on us,” he said.

“Even under this environment, we as war veterans have to resolutely protect the integrity of our independence and the interests of our nation against those who wish us to fail.”

Cde Mahiya commended the President for their unwavering support since the League’s establishment in 2022.

He highlighted the War Veterans Revolving Fund as a significant milestone that has improved the welfare of former fighters and stressed the importance of empowering the children of war veterans to actively participate in the national economy.

In a bid to improve the welfare of war veterans, President Mnangagwa has launched a War Veterans Mechanisation Programme and revolving fund meant to economically empower them.

The initiative is the latest in a series of programmes aimed at improving the welfare of war veterans, who continue to reap the benefits of their sacrifice during the liberation struggle against white colonial rule.
