War veterans are set to benefit from a beekeeping training following the launch of a training programme by Deputy Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Monica Mavhunga in Concession this week.

The aim of the programme is to economically empower the veterans for them to contribute to the national economy in line with the National Development Strategy.

Deputy Minister Mavhunga said the launch of the beekeeping programme was a testament of Government’s commitment to upholding provisions of the Constitution which require the welfare of war veterans to be taken care of.

“Our mandate as a Ministry as enshrined in Sections 23 and 84 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe is to look into the welfare of veterans of the liberation struggle by according them due respect, honour and recognition as well as to economically empower them. Our gathering today for this beekeeping training programme, is testament to Government’s commitment to uphold the provisions of the Constitution,” she said.

“It is an honour, as we gather to launch this unique and inspiring training programme, dedicated to the economic empowerment of our esteemed veterans. Today we embark on a journey that not only aims to economically empower the veterans but also offers them an opportunity to find purpose and new beginning, through the art of bee keeping.”

Deputy Minister Mavhunga said there was a ready market for honey locally and internationally making beekeeping an economically viable project.

“The Ministry’s aim is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to become successful beekeepers, thereby culminating in positive transformation of your livelihoods. This programme is not only just about beekeeping, but also helps in building a community and a support network, where you can connect with fellow veterans who share similar experiences and challenges.

We encourage you to engage in open discussions, share your stories and find comfort in the company of those who understand first-hand, the sacrifices you made in bringing about our hard-won Independence.”

Beekeeping is a non-extractive venture that fully integrates with other farming activities such as cattle ranching and crop production, with bees playing a crucial role of plant and crop pollination, and is a non-labour-intensive project that has massive benefits of job creation.
