George Maponga in Masvingo
War veterans and Zanu-PF youths in Masvingo have demanded annulment of Central Committee election results that were won by Cde Kudakwashe Bhasikiti in Mwenezi District, saying he was not supposed to become a member of the powerful organ because of his complicity in attempts to oust President Mugabe.
Cde Bhasikiti, who is also the Masvingo provincial affairs minister narrowly won by 73 votes to Cde Cuthbert Muzara’s 69 in the vote on Tuesday. Prior to the Central Committee elections, Cde Bhasikiti had been a target of the wrath of war veterans and Zanu-PF supporters who last week staged demonstrations that brought Masvingo city to a standstill.
They were demanding that he relinquishes both his posts in Zanu-PF and Government because of his links to a plot to depose President Mugabe in Masvingo together with fellow Politburo member Cde Dzikamai Mavhaire.
Cde Mavhaire led a cast of bigwigs in the province who failed to make it into the Central Committee after he was defeated by Masvingo Urban member of Parliament Cde Daniel Shumba by 151 votes to 51.
Masvingo war veterans’ provincial chairman Cde Charles Muchena on Wednesday said Cde Bhasikiti’s election into the Central Committee was null and void.
