Their anger was stoked by recent statements attributed to the minister in a private daily paper in which he reportedly said he was not going to increase civil servants salaries until a proper audit of diamond sales was conducted.
Minister Biti was, however, not at his office – the second time this week he has appeared to duck the war vets after having also not gone near his office on Monday when the group first looked for him.
Civil servants earn around US$200 monthly and have been pressing in vain for a review.
Attempts to pressure Minister Biti to use proceeds from diamond sales to improve salaries have so far been in vain.
Improved civil service salaries will likely result in better monthly pensions for war veterans.
Yesterday, the war veterans sang liberation songs and danced outside Minister Biti’s offices at the New Government Complex.
Their Harare provincial secretary for lands, Cde Isso Madzivanyika, said Minister Biti must resign from Government.
“As ex-combatants we want to understand from him what type of weapons he has to fight this war.
“He is also part of the Government which he wants to fight with. If this is his mentality, then he should resign because he does not understand his duties.
“Our welfare is also being neglected. Our children’s school fees for this term have not been paid,” he said.
