SHANGANI Residents of Shangani Station in Ward 23 came together on 15 May 2026 for a community clean-up of the local business centre, which had become heavily littered and difficult to use.
The initiative was led by Ward 23 Patriotic Vendors for ED Chief Security Officer Cde Botshiwe Ncube. She coordinated with residents and approached Shadow Councillor Cde Sikhanyisiwe Nkomo to request an excavator. Nkomo responded immediately, donating her excavator and a full tank of diesel to clear the area and dig proper waste disposal pits.
In an interview Cde Botshiwe Ncube said:
“A round of applause to our Shadow Councillor, Sikhanyisiwe Nkomo, for sacrificing her excavator and personally covering the diesel costs so we could clean our area and dig pits for waste disposal. She is a hero. Shangani Business Centre was in a terrible state — we hadn’t seen a clean-up like this since her tenure as councillor. Now the litter is gone.”
“I also want to thank my brother, Cde Bitton Ncube, whom I personally asked to bring his mine workers to assist. He responded immediately and took action. With his team, we managed to clear blocked drainages, dig the pits, remove all blockages, and tackle the worst dirt-polluted areas.”
She also extended thanks to ZANU PF Youth Secretary Cde Japhet Siziba for giving his time to support the clean-up.
The committee is now working to maintain the road to the club hall, where potholes have become dangerously deep and even trucks get stuck.
“Let’s build our beautiful Shangani together,” Ncube said. “A nation is built by its own people. Let’s all be hands-on and do away with litter.”
