WARD 6 Churu Councillor Zodiac Duri has warned residents occupying buffer zones and land reserved for schools that their houses could be demolished as the council moves to address illegal developments.
Speaking in an interview on Sunday on the sidelines of the Ward 6 pre-budget consultative and feedback meeting at the Southlea Park district office, Clr Duri said several areas along the Boka-Masvingo Road corridor had been affected by illegal construction.
He said structures had been built in buffer zones stretching from Boka up to Southlea Parkturn-off near the Skyline tollgate.
A buffer zone is an area reserved for Government and the City of Harare.
“There are people illegally building in the buffer zone,” he said.
Clr Duri said the First lady had requested the area from Trabablas towards the tollgate to be beautified.
“It is an area that is expected to be clean and without anything built in it, especially structures that are built illegally,” he said.
He warned that residents who had constructed illegal structures in such areas to expect enforcement action.
“So there are areas that we expect will soon face demolitions,” he said.
Clr Duri said other areas at risk of demolitions were land reserved for schools that had been invaded, with some people building houses and others putting up shops.
He urged residents to comply with planning regulations and avoid putting up structures on land reserved for public infrastructure.
