MINERS for Economic Development (Miners4ED)’s Midlands Chapter has donated 70 blankets to underprivileged groups across the province as part of efforts to address their plight ahead of the winter season.
The donation, which also included an assortment of items such as foodstuffs, cosmetics and sanitary wear, was bought using proceeds from the US$15 000 raised during the Midlands Independence Ball charity dinner held in Kwekwe on the eve of the 44th Independence Day celebrations
Miners4ED Midlands Chapter chairperson, Mr Cris Mahara said the gesture is part of their social responsibility beyond their mining operations.
“Our affiliation recognises the importance of extending a helping hand to those who are less fortunate. We firmly believe that it is our responsibility to contribute positively to society, not only through our mining operations but also through acts of compassion and generosity, which is in line with President Mnangagwa’s vision of leaving no one and no place behind,” he said.
“Donating blankets is a tangible way for miners to demonstrate their commitment to making a positive impact and fostering a more inclusive society.”
Mr Mahara added: “We understand the importance of empathy and compassion, and we strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who may be vulnerable or in need. We hope that these blankets will provide some solace, especially during the cold winter months when the need for warmth is most acute.”
Miners4ED was formed in 2022 primarily to mobilise youth and women to venture into the mining sector while advocating for increased mining production and revenue generation in line with the national mining roadmap.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at Connemara Open Prison in Gweru, Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Owen Ncube urged the private sector across the province to consider corporate social responsibility.
“I implore the private sector to strengthen its corporate social responsibility to our communities as it is a critical component of business ethics. I am, however, grateful to all corporates and individuals for extending their hands towards our Midlands 2024 Independence Ball, which yielded great rewards in cash and kindness.
“I will be handing over the proceeds to deserving communities in all districts of the Midlands province,” he said.
