Mbanga is reportedly in the United Kingdom.
Police are keen to interview him in connection with a story published in his newspaper’s December 11 to 17, 2008 issue under the headline, “ZEC director murdered”.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri yesterday said Mbanga alleged that a source close to the President’s Office had “revealed” minutes from a meeting in June 2008 whose agenda was to eliminate ZEC official, Mr Ignatius Mushangwe.
“He indicated Mushangwe was to be eliminated for ‘leaking’ the results of the 29 March 2008 Presidential elections,” said Supt Phiri.
Mbanga allegedly reported President Mugabe, Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa, senior ZEC officials, Police CommissionerGeneral Augustine Chihuri and CIO boss Retired BrigadierGeneral Happyton Bonyongwe, among others, attended the meeting.
“In reality, no such meeting took place and Mbanga’s story is frivolous, unfounded and misguided.”
He said all attempts would be made to bring Mbanga to book, even if he was in the UK, because the police force did not “operate in isolation”. -The Herald
