ZIMBABWE’S anticipated friendly international against Libya has been cancelled in the wake of the turmoil engulfing the North African country.
Nasser Ahmed, a representative of the Libya Football Federation, notified Zifa of the development yesterday.“I take this opportunity to thank you for your usual co-operation with our federation but due to these exceptional circumstances we are experiencing here in Libya, the instability and the lack of flights in and out of the country, we regret to inform you that we will not be able to play a friendly match in September.
“However, we keep all possibilities open to play friendly matches in the very near future,” Ahmed said.
In another development the Council of Southern African Football Associations has advised all member nations of the cancellation of this year’s edition of the Cosafa Cup.
After Zimbabwe’s withdrawal from hosting the tourney, Botswana were selected to take over but the Cup’s commercial sponsor wanted the games staged in South Africa at no cost to Safa.
“No one is more disappointed than I, but now we can only work even harder and look forward towards the hosting and sponsorship for the 2015 tournament,” Cosafa president Suketu Patel said.
“The Cosafa Cup plays a crucial role in helping develop the national teams of member associations and this year would have been of huge benefit as they prepare for qualifiers for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.”
