WARRIORS were declared winners of the 2022 Bulawayo Rugby 10s tournament round two that was held at the city’s ceremonial home of rugby, Hartsfield Rugby Grounds on Saturday after two last games were not played due to bad light.
The Ruben Kumpasa coached Warriors managed to win all their games played on the day to take home the accolade of the best team of the tournament.
In their first match of the second round, Warriors played against Old Miltonians who walked out in last week’s round one of the tournament due to player disputes.
Warriors emerged 22-12 victors to get the ball running in the right direction.
In the second match, Warriors thumped Bosso 24-0 to make it two out of two and in their third match they emerged 22-0 winners over Bulldogs and they rounded up their brilliant performance with a 12-0 win over Highlanders.
In other fixtures played on the day, Highlanders won 17-7 against Bosso and went on to triumph 12-10 against Bulldogs again. Old Miltonians won 7-0 against Bulldogs and they lost their match against Bosso 24-12. The match between Old Miltonians and Highlanders ended as a 12-12 stalemate.
The winners, Warriors finished with 12 points from a possible 12 while in second place, Highlanders had seven points. Old Miltonians were in third position with four points while Bosso in fourth place had three points. Bottom placed Bulldogs had no points on the table.
Kumpasa said he is happy with the way his team played throughout the tournament as they had young players who are eager to play and keep learning and is also confident, they will take the team through in other coming tournaments.
The 10s tournament was used as a way of keeping players fit as they prepare for the summer sevens and Bulawayo province is also planning a tour next month to Botswana but are still awaiting confirmation from the Botswana teams. — Follow on Twitter @brandon_malvin
