THE Government has launched an initiative to provide schools and health centres with access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) to tackle the spread of cholera.
Briefing the media at the Harare Water Technical Committee meeting yesterday, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister, Anxious Masuka, said the WASH schemes were part of a wider approach to water and hygiene issues in the country.
He also called on Harare residents to help make the environment cleaner in support of Government initiatives.
“We have formed the schools WASH sector so that we have a committee that focuses only on schools and ensure that the WASH requirements are adhered to so that medieval diseases such as cholera do not affect our children.
“We also now have WASH in health facilities to ensure every health centre has adequate water for admitted patients, but most importantly for people that visit.
“Government has activated the Civil Protection Unit to attend to the environment in Harare focusing on garbage removal, ensuring a societal approach to sanitation.
“Therefore, wherever you are, ensure that you adhere to sanitation issues to provide a clean and safe environment in your own way,” said Minister Masuka.
