Masawara Group of Companies has donated a heavy-duty washing machine to Beatrice Road Infectious Diseases Hospital to assist in the fight against cholera.

The donation was channelled through the Executive Interaction Initiative (EII), a forum of business executives and the military’s top brass aimed at raising funds for charity, which Masawara Group is part of.

Speaking during the official handover ceremony, Acting Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Commander Air Marshal Elson Moyo said the donation would reinforce Government’s efforts to fight against the disease.

“The donation from Masawara with the support of other corporate donors will go a long way in assisting the Government to curb the further spread of the cholera epidemic which claimed the lives of many people and affected many,” said Air Marshal Moyo.

He said the decision to secure funds to procure a washing machine was reached following a business executive forum held in Victoria Falls under the auspices of EII in September last year.

Masawara is a conglomerate comprising Cresta Hotels, Zimnat, Dandemutande, Minerva, Sable Chemicals and Grand Reinsurance.

Speaking on behalf of group chief executive Mr Shingai Mutasa, Minerva managing director Mrs Lydia Tanyanyiwa said they came together to ensure that Zimbabwe is free from cholera.

“We agreed that the focus of our intervention would be on the prevention of the transmission of the disease and its treatment. As Masarawa Group we are pleased to partner the ZDF in the fight against cholera,” said Mrs Tanyanyiwa.

The 55-kilogramme Gibrau washer extractor was purchased from Spain at a cost of US$ 65 000 and washes at least 400 blankets per run of more than eight hours non-stop.

Harare Mayor Councillor Herbert Gomba expressed gratitude to Masawara Group saying the donation would help Harare City Council in achieving its goal of becoming a world class city by the year 2025.

“The gesture by Maswara Group is critical for us as the Harare City Council as it will assist us in realising one of our top (goals)of achieving a world class city status by 2025 through a world-class health facility,” said cllr Gomba.

Air Marshal Moyo later toured a section of the hospital set aside for nursing cholera patients.

The hospital is responsible for washing blankets for all the city’s clinics and the new washing machine will augment the five others it is already using.
