ONE of Zimbabwe’s top junior motocross riders Regan Wasmuth has recovered from a wrist injury and has declared himself fully fit to compete in the last round of the 2015 Monster Energy South African National Championship series in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Wasmuth (13) hurt his wrist during the penultimate round of the seven-round South African National Championship series at Teza (Richards Bay) in KwaZulu Natal on October 13 and failed to last the distance in the 125cc High School Class.
This hampered his chances of fighting for a top three finish in the final championship standings of the season as he was at one stage lying in fifth place with 163 points after the first five rounds of the series.
But Wasmuth told The Herald earlier this week that he has now fully recovered from the wrist injury that he sustained at Teza some three weeks ago and was itching to get back on the bike and compete in the seventh and final round of this year’s South African National Championship series at Smoking Pistons in Johannesburg on Saturday.
“I’ve got some very good news for my fans out there. This last Sunday I tried to ride for the first time since I injured myself in Richards Bay. All was good and I didn’t have any pain. I just need to get the wrist stronger for the final round of the South African National Championship series this weekend and I’m hoping to get some great results!
“It’s all good, I rode on Sunday and I’m ready for Smoking Pistons. I should get a very good result there,” Wasmuth said.
At Smoking Pistons, Wasmuth will be joined by fellow talented young Zimbabwean rider Emmanuel Bako who just needs a podium finish to walk away with this year’s South African National Championship series’ 50cc Pro Class title.
Bako picked up 42 points after emerging second overall in the penultimate round of the series at Teza on October 13 to bring his tally this season to 253 points and this saw him moving 15 points clear of his nearest rival, James Thompson of South Africa, at the top of the 50cc Pro Class standings.
And the Heritage Primary School’s Grade Three pupil just need another top two finish at Smoking Pistons on Saturday to be crowned the 50cc Pro Class champion for 2015 and this will see him emulating fellow young Zimbabwean rider Daiyaan Manuel who won the same title in South Africa last year.
Manuel has since graduated to ride in the 65cc Class.
It will be interesting to see how little Bako will handle the pressure during this Saturday’s final round of the South African National Championship series as all eyes will be on him at Smoking Pistons where he is looking at doing himself and the nation proud by keeping the 50cc Pro title in Zimbabwe after it was won by Manuel last year.
Judging from his performance during the penultimate round of the series at Teza, Bako is unlikely to face any major problems in claiming the required top two finish at Smoking Pistons on Saturday. In fact, at Teza, the 50cc class continued to produce some great racing and had one of the biggest fields on the day as there were 18 riders in this section.
