AFTER a successful transition to gospel music last year, Afrika Revenge frontman Willis Wataffi is now ready to take on the world of fashion, with his footwear range, Jesaus, now available as part of the musicianas Qaya Wear collection.A A
With what some would term a naughty play on the name of the Messiah, the shoe label falls in line with Wataffias transition to gospel, a move that saw him staying on top of the gospel charts for several weeks.
In an interview, the musician explained the concept behind Qaya Wear, an offshoot of his music label, Qaya Roots.
a?Qaya wear is the clothing label inspired by my surroundings and owing to the fact that in our Kore Kore kingdom we have our traditional garb that has been forgotten.
a?My desire is to bring that back and slowly introduce our Zimbabwean dress without taking away much from the past or the present. Itas an Afro Cosmo look that does not take away from both worlds,a? he said.
Wataffi went on to describe the inspiration behind the Jesaus range, saying he had simply adapted footwear that was prevalent in biblical times for modern tastes.
a?Footwear is called Jesaus by Wataffi meaning just us. These are mostly open shoe gladiators for both men and women. Derived from the fact that we always called them ma Jesus because we first saw the Romans wearing them and Jesus wearing them too hence Jesaus by Wataffi footwear,a? he said.
The musician, who is delivering his clothing range door to door at present, said that the clothes were not targeted at one specific kind of clientele but were instead aimed at people from diverse backgrounds.
a?Itas for everyone. Itas for anyone who loves a bit of culture and is still moving with the times and also has a sense of pride and belonging. It cuts across the two and one feels afro and Cosmo at the same time. Thereas a stamp of the African voice in the clothes,a? he said.
