Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Nyamandlovu
CHIEF Mathuphula has hailed the Tsholotsho Road Rehabilitation Initiative, describing its launch today as a landmark moment that demonstrates the power of communities taking ownership of their own development.
The community-driven programme was officially launched in Nyamandlovu on Friday by Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo.
Speaking ahead of the launch, Chief Mathuphula commended members of the Tsholotsho community for spearheading the initiative, saying it reflected President Mnangagwa’s development philosophy that “ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo” (a country is built by its owners).
“It is an exciting day for everyone. We are happy that the initiative is being launched today by our Minister, ubaba uMoyo. What makes this even more humbling is that this initiative was started by abantwana beTsholotsho.
“This fulfils President Mnangagwa’s philosophy that ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo,” said Chief Mathuphula.
The Tsholotsho Road Rehabilitation Initiative was spearheaded by members of the Tsholotsho community, led by Botswana-based businessman Mr Cephas Tshuma, who mobilised residents and other well-wishers to contribute resources towards rehabilitating the long-neglected Bulawayo-Tsholotsho Road.
The community has so far raised funds to purchase 36 000 litres of diesel to power road construction equipment, underscoring a growing spirit of citizen participation in infrastructure development.
The rehabilitation programme will complement Government efforts to improve the strategic road, which is critical for the movement of people, agricultural produce and goods between Bulawayo and Tsholotsho.
The launch ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, including Chief Deli, Chief Mahlathini and Chief Sipho.
Also present were Matabeleland North Senator Alice Dube, Tsholotsho South legislator and Deputy Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities Musa Ncube, and Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) officials led by board member Ms Monica Ngwenya.
