The rise of the Dinson Iron and Steel Company (DISCO) on the outskirts of Chivhu represents one of the most ambitious industrial undertakings in Zimbabwe’s post-independence history. At an estimated value of US$1.5 billion, the integrated steel project is expected to redefine the country’s manufacturing landscape and accelerate the implementation of the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2), which places industrialisation, infrastructure development and value addition at the centre of Zimbabwe’s economic transformation agenda.

Yet, beyond the towering blast furnaces and sprawling industrial infrastructure, another story is unfolding—one that revolves around environmental management, technological adaptation and the relocation of communities whose lives have been reshaped by the country’s largest steel investment.

As governments and investors increasingly place environmental sustainability at the centre of heavy industry, the challenge facing modern steel producers is no longer limited to production output alone. The real test lies in balancing industrial expansion with environmental protection and community development.
A recent visit to DISCO’s operations and the resettlement areas at Single Thorn Farm in Chivhu and Sable Flats Farm in Chikomba revealed an industrial ecosystem undergoing rapid transformation, supported by advanced emission-control technologies and a resettlement programme that continues to redefine the relationship between mining, industry and local communities.

Steel production involves multiple processes—from crushing and sintering to smelting and rolling—all of which generate particulate emissions that require sophisticated mitigation systems.
At DISCO’s lime kiln, conveyor belts and crushing stations have been fitted with enclosed barriers specifically designed to minimise the escape of dust particles into the surrounding environment.
Within the sintering plant, industrial baghouse systems capture particulate matter generated during the crushing and mixing of raw materials. Contaminated air is channelled through filtration chambers, where dust particles are trapped before clean air is released back into the atmosphere.

One of the most technically advanced systems deployed at the plant is the electrostatic precipitator. The technology uses high-voltage electrical charges to attract and remove particulate matter from industrial gases before they are discharged through chimneys, significantly reducing airborne emissions.
Additional environmental safeguards have been introduced at the blast furnace, where gravity vacuum storage bunkers and cloth-bag filtration systems remove dust from furnace gases before they are recycled for combustion.
The steel rolling plant has also incorporated soot-blower technology, which improves thermal efficiency by removing soot deposits from heating surfaces, reducing fuel consumption and lowering carbon emissions.
At the power-generation facility, electrostatic precipitators work alongside stack scrubbers that remove sulphur dioxide and other pollutants from flue gases, minimising their impact on air quality.
Environmental experts note that the deployment of such technologies has become increasingly important as steel producers around the world face growing pressure to reduce emissions and adopt cleaner production methods.
Away from the industrial complex, new communities are emerging at Single Thorn Farm in Chivhu and Sable Flats Farm in Chikomba, where relocated families are adapting to a new environment.
Nomore Zinatsa, one of the beneficiaries of the relocation programme, described the transition as the beginning of a new chapter.
“Every relocation process comes with challenges, but we are optimistic about the future and the opportunities that this development brings to our families and our children,” he said.
Chenjerayi Mushore said the transformation taking place in the area extends beyond infrastructure.
“We are witnessing economic development on a scale that many of us never imagined. The project has brought new opportunities, and we hope to benefit from the growth that is taking place.”
For Willard Chikanya, the significance of DISCO lies in its potential to change Zimbabwe’s industrial fortunes.
“Projects of this magnitude do not come every day. What is important is that communities continue to be part of the country’s development story.”
Under the National Development Strategy 2, Zimbabwe has identified industrialisation and mineral beneficiation as critical pillars for sustainable economic growth. The emergence of DISCO is expected to strengthen domestic steel production, reduce imports and stimulate downstream industries ranging from engineering and construction to transport and manufacturing.
For policymakers, economists and environmental specialists, the project represents an important case study: whether large-scale industrialisation in Africa can simultaneously drive economic growth, protect the environment and improve livelihoods.
As the furnaces continue to power Zimbabwe’s steel ambitions, the story of DISCO is still being written—not only in tonnes of steel produced, but also in the communities being built, the technologies being deployed and the environmental standards being shaped for future generations.
