UMZINGWANE’s Chief Nomalanga Sigola has been officially installed as the substantive Chief Sigola, almost three years after the death of her father Chief Zephania Sigola, becoming the eighth female chief in Zimbabwe.

The ceremony was held at Sigola Primary School where the Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe, who ought to have been represented by the Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Albert Nguluvhe who however could not make it but sent Director Coordination in his office Ms Sikhangele Ndlovu, said the appointment and installation of Chief Sigola as the substantive Chief Sigola is a significant milestone for the Sigola community and a powerful demonstration of the important role of women in leadership and decision-making.

He said it reflects the country’s commitment to promoting equality, inclusivity and equal opportunities for women to participate in leadership, including within traditional institutions.

“This victory is not for the Chief alone; it is a victory for the people of Esiphezini, for every woman, and for every girl child who dreams of leadership and a better future.

We look forward to a new chapter in which Her Royal Highness will work together with her people, fellow traditional leaders, Government and all stakeholders, to promote peace, unity, cultural preservation and sustainable development in the Sigola area,” said Minister Garwe.

He said her appointment provides an opportunity for her to draw upon her life experiences, knowledge and skills in promoting unity, preserving the culture and traditions of her people, and contributing to the social and economic development of the Sigola community and Umzingwane District

“As the only surviving daughter of the late Chief Zephania Sigola, who passed away in 2023, your ascension marks a significant new chapter in the history of the Sigola chieftainship. Your succession reflects the rich Nguni/Kalanga traditional heritage and customs of succession, while also demonstrating the evolving role of women in traditional leadership,” said Minister Garwe.

According to the Constitution of Zimbabwe and Traditional Leaders Act 29:17, said Minister Garwe, Chiefs are expected to spearhead and support the development and well-being of their communities and as the nation advances towards Vision 2030 under the leadership Mnangagwa, the nation remains guided by the principle of leaving no one and no place behind.

“I encourage you to lead with wisdom, humility, fairness and compassion. Treat all your people equally and fairly, regardless of their background or differences. Let your traditional court be an institution of justice, peace and reconciliation. Use your position to unite your people and promote peaceful coexistence,” said Minister Garwe.

He urged the newly installed chief to maintain strong and cordial relations with nerghtiouring chiefs, traditional leaders and all institutions within her area, saying the Sigola chieftainship be a symbol of unity, cooperation, peace and development.
