Designer of the Ratanyana Anamorphic Memorial, Mr Mthandazo Ngungu, on Friday briefed Vice President Kembo Mohadi on the thinking behind the unique commemorative installation, describing it as a powerful reflection on perspective, memory and the complexities of conflict.

Speaking during the Vice President’s visit to the Ratanyana Memorial Battle Site, Mr Ngungu said the installation was conceived as a site-specific tribute to lives lost during a fierce confrontation in the area.

“The Ratanyana Anamorphic Memorial is a site-specific commemorative installation that memorialises lives lost during a six-hour armed confrontation near the Ratanyana River.

“The memorial acknowledges both innocent casualties — four children caught in the crossfire and mistakenly identified as guerrillas — and ten guerrilla fighters who died during the same encounter,” said Ngungu.

He said the memorial goes beyond traditional forms of remembrance by adopting a contemporary artistic approach that challenges viewers to engage with history from multiple perspectives.

He said through a contemporary anamorphic sculptural approach integrated within a carefully choreographed landscape, “the memorial presents history as something shaped by perspective, motive and perception.”

Mr Ngungu told Vice President Mohadi that the core idea behind the installation is that a single structure can embody different meanings depending on the viewer’s position.

He said: “The core idea of the memorial is that one structure can carry multiple truths, depending on where one stands.

“Using anamorphic design principles, the sculpture reveals different narratives from different viewpoints, symbolising how fear, misidentification and confusion during conflict can result in irreversible tragedy.”

The Ratanyana Anamorphic Memorial forms part of broader efforts to preserve the country’s liberation history while embracing modern methods of storytelling that resonate with contemporary audiences.
