For the fourth consecutive year, Bulawayo-based poet Dr Gasolo is set to embark on a gruelling 250-kilometre walk from his rural Matshetsheni village, Gwanda, to Bulawayo, a journey aimed at highlighting the importance of a thriving creative sector as a viable economic driver.
The walk is more than a test of endurance. Along the route, Dr Gasolo engages with locals, sharing his vision for the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) and discussing pressing societal issues, including drug and substance abuse and mental health challenges, topics he believes threaten the potential of future generations.
This year’s journey kicks off on Thursday morning, with the first overnight stop in Gwanda town, Matabeleland South. On day two, the march continues from Gwanda to Esigodini, before entering the Bulawayo Metropolitan area on the third day.
Speaking ahead of the walk, Dr Gasolo said he is prepared and grateful for the growing support he has received over the years.
“I’ll be in Matshetsheni tonight, and I can safely say that I’m both physically and mentally ready. The support each year keeps growing, which shows that people are hearing the messages, and I hope they put them into action.
“I’ve received water, T-shirts, reflective vests, pledges of food along the way, and even a massage to ease the pain,” he said.
Dr Gasolo’s walk has become a unique platform for advocacy, using endurance, dialogue, and visibility to push for greater recognition and support for Zimbabwe’s creative industries.
