HIGHLANDERS Volleyball Club produced a scintillating display to claw back from a set down to equalise against Black Rhinos and eventually win the national men’s championship title at Hillside Teachers’ Training College Courts yesterday evening.
In the women’s final University of Zimbabwe, a dominant side since the 1980s, made light work of Harare City whom they beat 3-1. It was a great game too with the girls showing a masterly display in the appreciation of basics and skill.
It was a gallant fightback that won Highlanders the hearts of many and had many Bulawayo volleyball fans in the 400-strong crowd routing for them in a final won 25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 26-24 and 15-13 to bring the curtains down to an exhilarating two days of great volleyball action.
Zimbabwe Volleyball Association vice president Brian Emmanuel said the winners of the tournament will represent Zimbabwe at next year’s Region Five Club Championships.
“The winners will represent Zimbabwe at next year’s championships. It’s been two days of great volleyball action and we happy to see a Bulawayo team in the final,” said Emmanuel as Highlanders battled with Rhinos on Court 1.
Highlanders’ magnificent comeback was fronted by an all-round good display by the whole team, varying their attacks from slow tempo to fast, spotting and placing on empty pockets on the court then rise to it with a tight block when need arose.
Yesterday’s action ended the 2024 season of the Zimbabwe Premier Volleyball League in which 10 women’s teams and 14 men’s took part.
