HIGHLANDERS’ poster boy of the 1980s, Madinda Ndlovu, once asked to be substituted because he wanted to save his permed hair.

Rains started pouring just as they were about to resume the second half, Madinda once refused to take to the field at Arcadia’s Danny Bismark Stadium.

Highlanders were forced to replace him with goalkeeper Peter Nkomo who previously played as a winger before switching to goal in the late 1970s. Kingstone Phiri replaced Nkomo who went on to score the winner as Bosso won 2-1.

Speaking on Sakhelene Nxumalo’s DIASBHORA Podcast.

“Perm was expensive, you have just had a retouch and you go out and find its raining, would you go and play?

“I remember one game in Harare, a match against Arcadia at Danny Bismark, I refused to return in the second half as it was raining, they substituted me, and replaced me with Peter Nkomo and Kingstone, Lawrence Phiri’s young brother covered in goal, guess what Peter Nkomo scored the winner, you can google the match,” said Madinda.

Highlanders won that early 1980s tie 2-1.

Madinda was in trouble with fans as he avoided going for high balls to save his perm. That was not the only thing that the club contended with their player who boasts the highest number of appearances on the Soccer Star of the Year calendar, he would ask to be released from camp hours before matches to attend church at St Patrick’s in Makokoba.

On song Madinda was unstoppable for club and country.
