Induna Barracks Secondary School dominated the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Imbizo District finals after scooping 24 gold 20 silver and 13 bronze medals at White City Stadium.

The district finals were held on Thursday and Friday with 12 schools namely CBC, Eastview, Elite, Emganwini, Induna, Maranatha, Masiyephambili, Mncumbatha, Nketa, Petra, Tennyson, and Emsizini.

After a fierce two-day competition in track and field events that drew a large crowd from not only participating schools but also from sports lovers from the surrounding suburbs, Induna was the district champion with a total of 57 medals.

In second place was Petra High School with 41 medals; 16 gold, 13 silver, and 12 bronze.

Mncumbatha Secondary School from Nkulumane 12 were a surprise package after shrugging off the challenge of former Group A schools and finishing 3rd with 39 medals; 15 gold, 17 silver and seven bronze.

Tennyson Hlabangana High finished 4th with 15 gold while CBC and Emganwini were 5th and 6th with seven gold medals each.

Maranatha and Elite finished 10th and 11th with no gold, with the former managing five silver and four bronze while the latter got three silver medals.

Emsizini went home empty-handed with no medal.

The sporting event was meant to come up with a district team that will represent Imbizo District at the Bulawayo provincial Nash track and field events finals on 8 March at the same venue.

This will also lead to the selection of a provincial team that will represent Bulawayo at the Nash national finals to be hosted by Matabeleland North at Mosi-oa-Tunya High School in Victoria Falls on 18 and 19 March.

Other districts have also been holding their zonal finals.

Imbizo District select team was expected to start training this Monday at a venue to be announced while sports directors were set to meet at Nketa High School to start preparations for the provincial finals.

While the event went well, there were complaints about timekeeping as some runners’ times were allegedly wrongly captured resulting in others failing to get their medals.

Nash Imbizo District chair Makanyara Martha Chinhara who is head for Mncumbatha encouraged athletes to take sport seriously.

We are now team Imbizo despite hailing from different schools. I urge you to come together and train more than we did when we were training for this day so that we become a force to reckon with. Sport can be a profession, especially for you athletes and you must train so that you keep fit and in shape. I urge schools to identify clubs for learners so that they continue shining even after completing school so that they become professional athletes,” she said.
