Rhumba band Insimbi ZeZhwane has uncovered a shop at Maphisa Centre allegedly pirating and selling their regalia at inflated prices without the band’s consent.

Band leader Meluleki “Brema” Moyo revealed that the discovery was made following a tip-off. He and his management team visited the shop, owned by a woman identified as “Focus NaTrevor,” and subsequently engaged the police over the matter.

The shop is reportedly selling items such as jackets and hats, which are part of the band’s official merchandise.
“This is unacceptable because she’s making money from our name while we’re not benefiting at all. She could have approached us legally to distribute our merchandise, and we could have reached an agreement,” said Brema.

He added, “Our hats are priced at R150, but she is selling them at ZAR200. Similarly, our jackets are R450, yet she is exploiting fans by charging R600.”

During their visit, the band observed several of their fans wearing regalia suspected to have been purchased from the shop. Brema noted that Insimbi ZeZhwane sells their merchandise mainly through direct orders and had never received orders from Maphisa, raising suspicions about the source of the items.
“We’ll not rest until we get what is due to us. Those who wish to sell our merchandise are welcome to engage with us to do so legally,” said Brema.

Artistes have long suffered from music piracy, and now, as many diversify into selling branded regalia, they face a similar challenge with counterfeiters looking to profit unlawfully.

Meanwhile, the band continues to soar in popularity with their latest release, Imbobo Zamajuba. – @themkhust
