MATABELELAND North primary schools are today battling for provincial honours in choral music, Jikinya traditional dance and chess at the Amphitheatre in Bulawayo, with winners set to represent the province at the national finals.

The competitions have drawn participants from Hwange, Binga, Nkayi, Bubi, Tsholotsho and host district Umguza, showcasing learners’ talents in music, cultural expression and strategic thinking.

The provincial contests are part of the selection process to identify schools and learners who will represent Matabeleland North at the national finals.

The three disciplines give pupils an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities beyond the classroom while promoting creativity, teamwork, discipline and intellectual development.

Choral music allows learners to showcase their vocal abilities and coordination, while the Jikinya traditional dance competition promotes appreciation and preservation of Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage among young people.

Chess, meanwhile, challenges pupils to think critically, concentrate and make strategic decisions.

The competitions also provide a platform for schools from different districts to interact, exchange experiences and learn from one another as they compete for provincial honours.

The programme forms part of efforts to nurture talent among primary school learners and encourage participation in cultural, sporting and academic activities as part of their overall development.
