The owner of DGL5 Mine has expressed deep regret following the shooting of a man by a company security guard, describing the incident as “completely unacceptable.”

Mr Francisco Marconitti said the guard should have used rubber bullets, not live ammunition.
“This is not how the company operates. The security guard was supposed to use rubber bullets, not live ammunition. What he did firing real bullets is completely unacceptable,” Marconitti said.

He expressed sorrow to the family of the deceased and the community, while questioning the guard’s actions.

“I don’t know what was wrong with the guard, maybe he had smoked something. But he is a trained security officer who served in the army for 10 years, and he’s a senior here, so he knows how we operate,” he added.

Marconitti said he would take full responsibility, pledging to cover the funeral expenses and the medical bills of the two injured.

“I will take full responsibility. I’m going to cover the funeral expenses and also the medical bills of the other two who were injured,” he said.

Police have confirmed that the security guard is in custody at Inyathi Police Station, and investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
