THE 18 passengers who perished while aboard a Toyota Quantum vehicle that exploded along Bulawayo-Esigodini Road on Thursday were mourners travelling from Nkayi to Gwanda, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe said.

A visibly shaken Minister Garwe arrived at the accident scene from Maphisa where he led a high-level Government delegation for final assessment of the Independence Day celebrations.

“We have been informed that all the 18 people died on the spot, the vehicle was carrying mourners from Nkayi to Gwanda and we are really saddened as Government. Some of the deceased have since been identified by their relatives. The cause of the accident is not yet ascertained, the police are still carrying out investigations,” said Minister Garwe.

The vehicle is believed to have been carrying explosives although that is yet to be authenticated by officials.
