The awards recognises the invaluable contributions made by members of the community in Matabeleland who serve as pillars of inspiration. Chief Dakamela, a beacon of transformative leadership shown in his remarkable efforts in uplifting his rural community, said the awards were meant to recognise people who are doing well in different disciplines.
Last year, the awards attracted over 5 000 people including cultural leaders, politicians, arts and culture enthusiasts as well as members from the local community. On their second edition, Chief Dakamela said they are aiming at attracting more people.
“We launched these awards last year as a way of recognising and rewarding people in our community who are doing well in uplifting us in different disciplines. Last year we were in the early phases of the new normal — recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. But we managed to attract over 5 000 people, meaning that this year on our second edition we can do much better,” said Chief Dakamela.
He also revealed that eight beasts will be slaughtered for the guests who will attend the event, with Carl Joshua Ncube’s Rural AirBnB initiative providing culinary services to those at the high table.
Ncube — a seasoned comedian and chef, said it was an honour to have partnered with the Dakamela Appreciative Awards, and he urged guests to brace themselves for a variety of African indigenous delicious meals.
“As Rural AirBnB we are working on unlocking potentials that are in the rural areas. Specifically for this event, the food that we will be serving will be a combination of celebrating drought-resistant crops. For example, as an alternative to mealie-meal (isitshwala), we will be dishing out food from other grains like sorghum. Eight beasts will be slaughtered so we will be involved in the food preparation process as will be serving those on the high table. We will cook the insides in a different manner like making sausages using large intestines (amalusu). It’s definitely going to be a fun filled festivity,” said Carl Joshua.
Chief Dakamela has made notable accomplishments in his area which is often affected by drought, through implementing ways of enabling the community to be self-sufficient in fighting drought and at the same time developing the village.
