THREE buildings in Bulawayo’s central business district were partially gutted by fire on Tuesday, prompting a massive response from the Bulawayo Fire Brigade as firefighters battled to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighbouring properties.

Multiple teams from the fire brigade, supported by six fire engines, were deployed to the scene along Lobengula Street where the inferno engulfed a number of business premises.

Among the affected properties were a popular supermarket, a Chinese-owned retail shop and a butchery, all of which sustained significant damage.
The fire caused panic in the city centre and brought business activities to a standstill as hundreds of curious onlookers gathered to watch firefighters battling the flames.
Two ambulances were on standby at the site of the blaze to ferry anyone that requires medical attention.
Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mr Mhlangano Moyo was on site overseeing operations and coordinating emergency teams as they worked to bring the situation under control.
