TWO more Bulawayo City councillors have been arrested in connection with the alleged US$52 000 extortion case involving Deputy Mayor Councillor Edwin Ndlovu and two other accused persons.
Ward three Councillor Mxolisi Mahlangu and Ward 15 Councillor Ashton Mhlanga presented themselves to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) offices in Bulawayo on Wednesday morning, where they were formally charged before being taken into custody.
The two are expected to appear before the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
Their arrest brings to five the number of current and former Bulawayo councillors now linked to the widening investigation into allegations that a local businessman was targeted for US$52 000.
Clrs Mahlangu and Mhlanga are accused of acting in cahoots with Clr Ndlovu, Ward 28 Councillor Ntandoyenkosi Ndlovu and former Ward 22 councillor Alderman Rodney Jele, who are already before the courts on similar allegations.
Their lawyer, Mr Nqobani Sithole, confirmed the arrest, saying they were not on the run and had presented themselves to the anti-corruption board before being arrested.
“They have been formally charged with extortion and will appear in court tomorrow (Thursday),” he said.
