A swift rescue operation saved two people after an Isuzu single cab was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded Mwewe River near Maphisa in the Matobo district, Matabeleland South province on Tuesday morning.

Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mr Mhlangano Moyo said the incident occurred around 10.30am when the vehicle, which was travelling towards Maphisa, failed to negotiate the flooded crossing and missed the bridge.

“The Isuzu single cab heading to Maphisa failed to negotiate through the flooded Mwewe River, missed the bridge with two persons in the vehicle and was swept away,” said Mr Moyo.

He said the vehicle later got trapped in the fast-flowing water, forcing the occupants to climb onto the roof to avoid being submerged.

“They had to scale on top of the vehicle after it was swept away and got trapped,” he said.

Mr Moyo said the Maphisa Fire Brigade was immediately summoned to attend the incident and later raised Bulawayo Fire Brigade for assistance.

“When the Maphisa team got to the scene, this is what they found and they notified us, resulting in a request for air rescue. In the meantime, we advised them on what to try if it was safe,” he said.

Using rescue lines and throw lines, the firefighters managed to rescue the two occupants.

Mr Moyo commended the operation, saying it was commendable work by a newly trained team.

“Overall, this was good work for a newly trained team and as Bulawayo, we are proud of this operation,” he said.

Authorities have once again urged motorists to avoid crossing flooded rivers during the rainy season, warning that water levels can rise rapidly and pose serious danger.
