URBAN farmers in Bulawayo have started gearing up for the 2025/26 summer cropping season by preparing land after recent rains that were experienced in the city.

Chronicle on Monday took a snap survey in various suburbs such as Mahatshula, Magwegwe, Pumula and Richmond where residents were busy with land preparations.

Some farmers with relatively huge pieces of land hired tractors for tiling.

Mr Ronald Makono hired a tractor for land preparation in Mahatshula were he has been practicing urban farming for over eight years.

“The 2024/25 ssson wasn’t a good one a good one for me but I managed to harvest 19 bags of maize. Each bag is 50 kilograms. In a good season I can harvest over 30 bags from this piece of land,” said Mr Makono.

He said the area in Mahatshula does well for early planting around mid November.

“At the peak of the rainy season around February the maize will be almost ready for harvesting,” he said.

Government is expected to start distributing seed and fertilister Presidential Inputs Scheme where farmers across the country, both rural and urban, benefit from the programme that lessens the financial burden in the summer cropping season.
